I am not a big fan of social media but at times it has helped me to learn and understand about things that I think about but didn’t have a source to know more from.

Hearing the new Genie 3 models capabilities being described by the Nobel prize winning Demis Hassabis some brought me to thinking about Eugene Wigners thought experiment.

Hassabis explains and demonstrated how the DeepMind creates a world in practically real time as the observer sees. There was a time when a programmer would painstakingly write every line of code, every shape, every color, every shadow detail, every movement … (you get the idea) for you to experience when you logged into a game or a program on your computer. Genie 3 – trained AI model which has observed millions of videos and the sort is trained on all laws of physics and how things work – by observation. Yet, it can’t come up with original thought and ideas. So that is still the realm of consciousness and ability of the human brain. Hassabis explains this – if we go back to 1901 and give all the possible training to this model – would it be independently able to come up with the theory of relativity that came forth in 1905 (pardon if my dates are incorrect – the idea is more important than the facts here). So in the virtual world of Genie 3 it creates stuff as it happens (currently based on human prompts) – take this a few levels ahead – perhaps attach Elon’s Neuralink here to the Genie 3 model for direct from brain inputs for creating what the brain thinks on the fly (currently in a virtual world).

Now comes Eugene Wigner – another Nobel prize winner. His theory spanning both physics and consciousness says that consciousness plays a key role in the existence of reality. The observer makes the world happen – so you are a part of the physical equation and not merely just an observer. See his experiment Wigner’s Friend. In the quantum world particles exist in a myriad of probabilities till they are observed – so the conscious observation has a physical effect on these particles.

Add up now the capabilities coming through with Genie 3 and marry them to Wigner’s theory – are we all living in a simulation where the reality is getting created as we think / observe? We can’t see the bigger picture because our consciousness is a part of this simulation itself.
